The nodes (Rahu and Ketu) are two points in space calculated by the positions of the Sun and Moon in relation to Earth. These Nodes mark the points where the paths of the Sun and Moon intersect. In Vedic astrology, the Nodes are classed as Shadowy planets. The Nodes are an important part of both the Vedic and Western birth charts.
The North Node(Rahu) represents the devouring head of an Asura dragon, who was beheaded by Vishnu, causing a huge appetite for the house (life area) that it transits. The South Node (Ketu), symbolized by the dragon’s tail, creates a release within the opposite house.
Rahu is an area that we feel extremely attracted to. The qualities of the sign and house where Rahu sits within the birth chart have an almost magnetic power over us. Rahu is the area of life that we put the most focus on and it is mostly concerned with material and earthly matters which can become a point of obsession. Rahu is said to have the nature of Mars.
Ketu is a life area that we have become comfortable with in past lives. As Ketu is the dragon’s severed body, it is said to follow the path of enlightenment to make spiritual progress. Ketu takes away what Rahu gives. An obsession with the North Node qualities can lead to a difficult “lesson” from Ketu!
The Nodes have an 18 year cycle and are always exactly opposite each other on the chart. An eclipse occurs when the Sun or Moon is near one of these points. This is reflected within the mythology of the Sun being swallowed by the serpent.
The Nodes are almost always retrograde and spend about 1.5 years in one sign.
Both of the Nodes are said to be malefic in nature, meaning that they can cause difficulties. I have noticed that most people swing between the North and South node throughout the course of their lives and become very focused on the North Node after the age of 36.
The North Node enters the sign of Aries on July 17th 2023 and will transit through this sign until January 2025.
As the North Node is already said to have the nature of Mars, its transit through the sign of Aries will bring about the extreme qualities of this sign.
Some themes of this transit will include war, violence, gender identity, possible earth events like earthquakes, extreme temperatures, volcanos, tsunamis and hurricanes.
The South Node, in Libra and ruled by Venus, are the themes that we are moving away from. Peace, diplomacy, harmony and understanding will be overshadowed by the fiery Aries and Mars themes.
Below, I have listed some historical events which occurred during transits of Rahu in Aries:
January. 25, 1949 6:37 pm -July 26, 1950 – Nato treaty signed. Start of the Korean war.
August 19, 1967 12:23 pm - April 19, 1969 – Race riots in the US. The start of “the troubles” in Northern Ireland.
April 6, 1986 12:32 am - May 5, 1986 – Halley’s comet visible from earth. Chernobyl nuclear power plant explodes.
December 26, 2004 2:31 am - June 22, 2006 – Hurricane Katrina. George Bush gets a second term. Trial of Saddam Hussein. Indian earth quake and tsunami.
So, as you can see, Rahu’s transit through Aries is connected with some major, global, events. It is highly likely that new, military alliances are formed between countries over the next 1.5 years. Another possibility is that international organizations gain more power and influence over laws and regulations within certain countries.
On a personal level, the transit will cause us to become intensely motivated to reach our goals, which are the themes of the house that Rahu is transiting within our own, personal birth charts. Rahu is currently at 29 degrees of Aries which is the location of the April 20th solar eclipse. We will experience a huge burst of energy that motivates us to reach success within a section of our lives. This can be hugely positive as long as we avoid becoming overly selfish and obsessed with material gains. Doing so will cause the separation of relationships and previously harmonious friendships.
The general public, under Rahu’s influence will become more combative and aggressive, particularly on the internet. It’s best to avoid silly arguments and instead channel the Aries energy into your own personal projects and goals.
